Ladies and gents

Please find below the judging criteria that will be used for the BDC in 2009.

The rules regarding judging.

Every driver will be judged equally on their performance on the day of competition. The event judge will explain what is expected on the track at each venue during the drivers briefing. During qualifying drivers will be scored out of 100 points. Points will be deducted as drivers make mistakes or deviate from the lines as explained by the event judge.

Twin drifting explained.

The winner of the Pro class is found using the following format. The top 16 drivers from qualifying in the Pro class drivers must compete against each other in a knock out competition. Drivers are matched as follows, the top qualifier competes against 16th, 2nd will compete against 15th and so on throughout the top 16. There will be a top 8 battle, and so on until there is an outright winner. Drivers are given 1 practice run with the highest qualifier leading, it is up to the drivers whether they choose to drive the track at full speed or do a sighting lap. Twin battles then take place over 2 judged runs with the higher qualifier leading on the practice and first run. On the straight leading up to the first corner will be a marker, this is usually in the form of a traffic cone placed in the middle of the track. When accelerating from the start line both cars must stay side by side until this point. If one car is more powerful and therefore quicker than the opponents then the driver of the faster car MUST allow the slower car to keep up. If a driver is judged to have taken an advantage leading up to the marker point ('drag racing') they will be warned and a restart will be called. There will be only one warning given, if a driver 'drag races' from the start points will be deducted. The driver of the slower car at all times must do all it can to go as fast as possible to compensate for the lack of power.

The chase car MUST tuck in DIRECTLY BEHIND the lead car not along side. The chase car must then try to better the lead cars speed line and angle through the remainder of the track while getting as close as possible without making contact. Twin drifting is scored out of 10 points. These are split between the two competing drivers. If the drivers are judged to have driven equally the score will be 5-:5. If one driver is judged to have an advantage they will score anything from a 6-4 to 9-1. If a driver spins in any run whether it be in qualifying or in a battle they will score no points.  From the marker point drivers must accelerate continuously until the initiation point, any lifting off the power or braking takes place by the lead car points will be deducted.

Overtaking

Overtaking is NOT a feature of drifting, the only time overtaking should take place is if the lead car makes a mistake allowing the chase car to pass. However if the chase car forces the lead car off line or causes an accident while attempting an over take then the chase car will lose considerable points and more often than not lose the battle.

Wheels on the track

Cars must keep 3 wheels/tyres on the track at all times, this means a car is allowed to ‘dirt drop’ with 1 wheel/tyre on the entry and exit to corners. Any car that has 2 wheels off the track at any one time will score 0 (zero) points.

Break downs.

Once a driver starts qualifying they must finish the event in the same car they started in. Drivers cannot swap cars at any stage once qualifying has begun.

Five Minute Rule.

When a driver in either class is due to start a judged run in the finals and is not present the rule will be used. The start line marshal will start a stop watch and the driver in question has 5 minutes to arrive at the start line and be ready to run. If the driver fails to arrive within the 5 minutes then he/she will forfeit the run. If this occurs during a twin drift battle the opponent will be given the victory with a 10 - 0 score.

Many thanks

The BDC team.
