Driver Profile
Michael Gaynor
Have been drifting since January 2005, been through an assortment of low budget cars through my apprenticeship and unable financially to compete. In 2008 I managed to compete but my car suffered reliability problems due to the lack of time and funds to get the car sorted.
I live and work in Derby, and learnt most of what I know on the streets, but I've attended about 12 drift events over the years and have not street drifted for over a year.
I also the co-founder of www.TrampDrift.com, a website dedicated to drifting without thinking you need to spend thousands on your car, and showing people you can do it in a normal car competitively.
In 2008 I competed in the British Drift Championship and when my car was working reasonably well, I managed to finish in 1st position and the next event I finished 3rd. Due to my acheivement in round 2 of the BDC I was granted a wild card to compete in the EDC (round 2, Knockhill). I wasn't able to afford to get there but thanks infinitely to the generous friends I have on Driftworks.com and TrampDrift.com I raised £600 which really helped me continue competing. I qualified 1st at the EDC but was knocked out due to a spurious decision in one run, which meant I gave up and spun in my final battle.
In the rest of the BDC season I managed to compete but I was struggling with popping radiator hoses, bottomed out suspension, smashed fuel tanks causing fuel starvation, and several other issues. Overall in 2008 I finished 7th position in the BDC Pro-am series. I was happy, but it has motivated me to focus much more on my car's preparation. Over the winter of 2008/09 I have been preparing the car with a new motorsport fuel system, front coilover suspension, simplified and repaired electronics, new bodywork for wheel clearance, and amongst other things - a much tidier body! Thanks to my aggressive driving style and "no fear" approach to drifting, numerous competitors found themselves unable to barge past me and instead barged into me... Thanks, lots of damage to my BMW!
For 2009 I have been invited to compete in the JDM Allstars, and will be competing in the BDC Pro category once more. I also hope to compete in the Prodrift Super Series, but this all depends on finances as things will be very tight again this year.
Pictures will be added with the new bodywork, custom steel wide-arches inspired by the e30 m3s and Lancia Delta Integrales of the period. Freshened up interior and underbody coated in metallic black with the same bronze/grey exterior, and a stripped down engine bay for easy maintenance and a great hot-rod look.
