Words & pics: Ross Lanson, Doristars.com

The British Drift Championship represents the pinnacle of drifting in the UK, and with a long summer break before the Knockhil final in September the BDC used August to host the Team Drift Weekender – a non-championship event setup purely to remind drivers why we all love drifting – for fun!

The weekender took place at the Norfolk arena, an old favourite in the British drift scene, with Friday being used purely for practice, Saturday as a single driver battle and Sunday the team competition. With action going on right until the evening the Drift Weekender was the perfect event for getting valuable seat time. Even with unforgiving concrete walls (and no championship points to play for!) drivers seemed to push even harder on the Norfolk course, giving spectators one of the best displays in BDC history. Not even the Great British weather could dampen spirits here…

With more track time than you could shake the proverbial at, it’s a chance for drivers to treat sponsors, family & friends to passenger rides and generally show off to the assembled media and spectators. I have never seen so many drivers showboat for the lens; everybody was willing to wave, give the bird or steal a flag from a marshal and wave it through the entire run Awesome!! (Matt Carter)

Just because it was a ‘fun’ weekend it didn’t mean that the drivers were not trying on track. Ben Morley in the MKII four door was just stunning! He was the first person I saw take to the track on my Saturday morning arrival, and produced 5 flawless laps each seemingly faster than the one before. The speed this car changes direction has to be seen to be believed.

Norfolk Arena brings out the best in people. Belinda Challis was super consistent While Team Green were looking ever more threatening for Sundays team comp with devastating displays of precision driving.

Unfortunately the great British summer time did it thing after a glorious sunny day a sudden downpour just before the evening competition turned the track into a ice rink, making the top 32 a tricky business. With no wind it seamed like an age before the track started to dry but as the sun set grip finally started to return to the track and the competition was on.

In the drying conditions Danni Murphy had the drive of her season sticking to Simon Perry’s door. Stewart Hansford in his sleeper 1JZ S13 was incredibly fast all day, but a spin against Paul Smith ended his evening. Mat Carter and Paul Cheshire were just phenomenal!

Inches apart through the runs they gave an awesome display of precision driving. With judges spectators stunned it didn’t seam to matter who actually won the battle witnessing it seamed enough, but it was a competition after all so after much deliberation it was deemed Matt Carter won and progressed through to the next round.

As the night progressed you would have been forgiven for thinking that a title and cheque for a £1,000,000 was at stake. Even though this was a ‘fun’ event nobody gave a inch. But in the end it came as usual to two drivers Matt Carter and Ben Morley. It’s worth noting that Ben is only in his first year of drifting but watching this final battle you would have thought he was a veteran of many years of sideways competition. I in no way envied the judges on this one! The end result. 1st Matt Carter, 2nd Ben Morley and 3rd Simon Perry.

Sunday morning and after a late finish resulting celebrations the cars were showing the signs of the hard day’s work they had undertaken. Signs of the night before were everywhere.. Ant Cahill arriving at the track in a shopping trolley ratchet strapped to the back of his pick up was one of the more surreal sights. A true petrol head BBQ in the Team Green pits.. A 40 gallon drum cut in half furnished with bits of Jaguar XJR for hinge and handle. Matt House’s RX7 V8 was a casualty of the Saturday event as his diff exploded putting him out of the team competition.

The rules for the Team event were simple. If you are not in a team already buddy up with a few drivers and form one, then drift the track in as close formation as you can manage.

Team Launch had a torrid weekend with two out of the 3 cars suffering mechanical problems. So Jordan Patton stepped into Team Launch for the weekend. Team MPH Customs were also a man down after Matts diff exploded. Team Green suffered a strange setback. Touching wheels with Alan Green, Paul Cheshire’s steering wheel violently span through his hands leaving him with a suspected broken thumb. Team Japspeed put in some close runs As the damage from Ant Cahill’s tow eye shows on Nathan Chivers bumper.

As the day progressed it was left down to 3 teams to fight it out for steps on the podium. Team Mint Tires, Team Green and Team Skyline Owners. With Skyline owners producing a stunning set of precision runs to take the win, Drifting is like a drug and like all drugs your tolerance to it builds up and you need bigger and bigger hits to satisfy your cravings. The BDC weekender provided a hit big enough to satisfy even the biggest drift junkie.

Donington Park may have missed out on the F1 this year, but for motorsport fans who want to see some decent action (and more overtaking…) the British Drift Championship was in full force putting some 60+ semi-pro and pro drifters through their paces on Saturday 10th July.

Round 4 took place on the Donington Launch Pad – a huge area of super smooth tarmac with few drops and dips making it a perfect place for a super-fast circuit. The BDC team decided to replicate a layout similar to that of the old Teeside track – a renowned driver favourite in the UK, albeit with a few twists. Drivers would initiate into a long right hand turn before tightening into a sharp hairpin, followed by a left transition and a 3rd gear S section to finish.

By 9am it was semi-pro practice time, and with the weather scorching and the venue finishing at 8pm it was going to be a very hot day for both driver and car. It didn’t take long for the familiar layout to produce some awesome practice runs, with semi-pro driver Martin Griffiths in his E30 BMW producing a seriously smokey run. The Team Scream S14s of Andy Redmond and John Glaister even decided to start the day with a bit of twinning!

Onto qualifying, and it was good to see Mike Cooper’s return after a huge crash during Round 3 which put his R32 Skyline out for good. Mike didn’t manage to re-shell his car in time (although he came damn near close thanks to the kind people on the Driftworks forum) so instead he borrowed Alan Green’s S14.5. It didn’t take long for Mike to get to grips with the S-body chassis, putting in a stonking run which qualified him first.

Another welcome return was the SR20-powered Mazda MX5 of Jamie Kenyon. Lightweight and turbo Nissan power makes the MX5 absolutely savage to watch, and Jamie’s definitely one of the upcoming drivers in the series.

After semi-pro qualifying, the results were:

1. Mike Cooper

2. Ian Phillips

3. Dannielle Murphy

4. Jordan Patton

5. John Glaister

6. Robert Finn

7. Andy Stroud

8. Jamie Kenyon

Onto the top 8, and first up was the R32 and PS13 of John Glaister and Jordan Patton. Both drivers took an advantage on each of their runs, but a slight advantage from John’s first run put him through to the semi finals sending Jordan out.

Next Andy Stroud placed against Neuton tyres driver Ian Phillips. A spin from Andy gave Ian a 10-0, and despite a strong run after Ian still pulled ahead with a 6-4 over Andy.

Irish girl Danielle Murphy was placed against fellow countryman Robert Finn in the third pairing, and despite pulling a 7-3 lead over Finn in the second run it wasn’t enough to recover from the spin she made in the first putting Robert through.

Final pairing before the semis was Mike Cooper and Jamie Kenyon, and what a fight it was! Both drivers scored 6-4 giving it ‘one more time’. In Jamies run, he managed to take a slight lead of 6-4 over Mike, but after pushing too hard to try and fight back Mike span the S14.5 putting Jamie through.

In the semis John Galister faced Ian Phillips. Despite putting a sterling performance in all day, John unfortunately span on the first run, finished by Ian pulling a 7-3 lead in the next run sealing his place in the final.

It was a much similar affair between Robert Finn and Jamie Kenyon, with Jamie pushing just too hard in the snappy Mazda spinning on both runs to put Finn into the final. For the battle for third place, Jamie span again on his run against John Glaister, and a faultless drive from John during his run gave him the third spot.

Into the final and the powerhouse Skyline R33 of Ian Phillips instantly pulled a 7-3 lead over Robert Finn. With Ian then following Robert in the second run, Ian continued to pressure Finn who unfortunately span out handing the 10-0 to Ian and the Round 4 semi-pro win. Congratulations to all the drivers for putting on one hell of a show on a very challenging course!

Over in the Pro class the hot weather combined with the vast amounts of sticky tarmac meant huge grip levels for some seriously fast runs. Instantly the freshly repaired Driftworks-sponsored R32 Skyline of Ben Broke-Smith pulled out a cracking qualifier churning clouds of smoke from the Skylines arches, qualifying second place above Japspeed’s Danny Eyles in the Japspeed S15 (also repaired after gearbox problems).

Further down in the field Team Green’s Matt Carter managed to qualify 7th using Danielle Murphy’s S14. Unfortunately for Matt’s own car, the SR20 decided to throw a piston out the side of the block retiring it from Round 4.

Qualifying first (and becoming a regular sight!) was the screaming Mk2 Escort of Declan Munnelly. Without doubt one of the most exciting cars to watch, what it lacks in power and smoke Decland makes up for with precision clipping, huge aggression and mega noise! What a car/driver combination.

1. Declan Munnelly

2. Ben Broke Smith

3. Paul Smith

4. Danny Eyles

5. Martin Richards

6. Mark Luney

7. Matt Carter

8. Ashley Stevens

9. Phil Morrison

10. David Waterworth

11. Gavin Cummings

12. Simon Perry

13. Shane Lynch

14. Grant Laker

15. Vince Noott

16. Julie Robinson

In the Pro top 16 first up was Simon Perry vs Martin Richards. Despite only qualifying 12th, there’s a good reason Perry’s right at the top of the championship instantly taking a 6-4 lead over 5th qualifier Martin. Unfortunately Martin didn’t get the chance to run again after technical problems put him past the 5 minute rule.

An all-Japspeed pairing was next with team mates Danny Eyles and Shane Lynch going head to head. Danny’s recently been one of the most aggressive drivers on the field, but Shane was eager to prove otherwise taking a 6-4 lead followed by a 7-3.

In the third pairing Matt Carter continued his charge using Murphy’s borrowed S14, drawing a 6-4 advantage over David Waterworth before scoring a 10-0 after David span on his own run putting Matt through.

It was a 1JZ affair in the next round, with Bon Bon’s R32 against Vince Noot’s PS13. Bon’s extra experience took him through with a 6-4 and a 7-3 over Vince to the semi finals.

Mark Luney in the SATS Team Supra began his charge after Round 3’s disaster in the final, taking a 6-4 over Gav Cummings and following with a solid 5-5 after to put him through.

Japspeed’s Paul Smith and Grant Lacker were up next, and to say they were ‘fairly matched’ doesn’t even come close! After the first runs, it had to go one more time. After the second runs… one more time AGAIN! During the second OMT, Paul took a slight advantage of 6-4 over Grant, who still followed it up with a 5-5 run showing just how close these two were.

Ashley Stevens faced the monster S15 (and another recently repaired car!) of Phil Morrison next, with an uncharacteristic error from Phil meaning another pair would go OMT. Phil sealed the deal with a 7-3 first and Ashley spinned on the next run, seeing Phil through.

Top qualifier Declan Hicks faced the R32 of Julie Robinson. Declan instantly pulled out a 7-3 advantage, and but despite Julie’s best attempts she just couldn’t get away from the Escort going 5-5 and putting Declan through.

Into the Top 8 and Japspeed’s Shane Lynch faced Simon Perry. Simon took a 7-3 lead in the first run, and after Shane straightened during the second run the Skyline Owners Skyline went through to the semis. Shortly after, Bon Bon faced Matt Carter – despite taking a 7-3 advantage, Bon had to retire the R32 due to mechanical gremlins raising their ugly head.

Paul ‘One More Time’ Smith faced Mark Luney next, and unbelievably went OMT after a stunning pair of runs from both drivers! Unfortunately for Paul, the power and speed of Luney’s Supra took 6-4 in both runs. The final pairing was Phil Morrison vs Declan Munnelley, and a super-aggressive Morrison stuck right to the back of Declan the whole time taking a 7-3 advantage. Into the second run, Phil pulled a huge gap on Declan to go through with a 6-4 over the Irishman.

The Semi Finals placed Simon Perry and Matt Carter, who’d been driving his nuts off all day in a borrowed car. Unfortunately for Matt, a spin saw Perry through to the final who without doubt is one of the most consistent drivers in the BDC this year.

Mark Luney and Phil Morrison would fight for the final place, both very capable, experienced drivers in very capable, powerful cars! After the first runs it would go OMT, and after a slight mistake from Phil put a wheel off track Luney went through to face Perry. For third place, Morrison and Carter went hard with the first run scoring 5-5. In the second run, Phil went berserk looking to close in on Carter… going a bit too fast and having to lock up to avoid contact, giving Matt a well-deserved third place.

In the final, Luney and Perry were absolutely relentless! Again, the first runs were too close to call, with OMT needed to separate the pairing. During the second runs, Perry straightened just momentarily but with Luney’s Supra performing faultless all day Mark took the win.

Congratulations to Mark Luney for finally taking a win after the disaster in Round 3 – Donington saw some of the most epic battles ever witnessed in the BDC, and the final at Knockhill on the 25th-26th September is not to be missed!

BDC Round 1: Silverstone

The 2010 British Drift Championship kicks off at Silverstone’s legendary Stowe complex demonstrating 72 of the UK’s finest drifters.

It’s amazing to see just how far the British Drift Championship has progressed in such a short period of time. Just a few years ago the series was almost sponsor-less, but in 2010 there’s no fewer than 72 drivers competing along with major sponsors Maxxis Tyres, Universal Turbos, Japspeed, Driftworks and Ultralite Wheels.

Round 1 took place at Silverstone’s Stowe Circuit, one of the oldest within the complex usually used for single seat race cars.

As per last year, BDC was divided into two classes – Pro and Semi-Pro with 32 Semi-Pro drivers and 40 Pros. The most impressive change for 2010 was the sheer quality and spec of the competing cars in both classes, with new team-ups including the Team Green/Falken Tyres collaboration of Paul Cheshire, Matt Carter and Alan Green. All three Nissans looked stunning in their Falken livery and furthers proved how the reputation of drifting in the UK is being taken more seriously as the sport progresses.

Onto the action and straight away BDC ‘newbie’ Phil Morrison’s Toyota-powered S15 took the top spot in the Pro class qualifying with a score of 95 out of 100. Simon Perry’s pink R33 GTS-T put in a stunning run taking the second qualifying spot with a score of 93 closely followed by the Japspeed S15 of Danny Eyles who scored 89.

Over in the Semi-Pro class, Mike Cooper’s R34-fronted, SR20-powered R32 qualified first in what turned out to be a sterling set of runs by all the Semi-Pro drivers on the day.

Another ‘new’ old face to the BDC was Irishman Mark Luney who’s massive-horsepower Supra took him to 4th place qualifying in the Pro class on his first outing. The sheer variety of car and engine setups made for a spectacular sight and sound during Round 1.

One of the most highly-anticipated cars for 2010 was the new Cosworth-powered Japspeed Impreza of Steve Biagioni. Sporting an EJ25 lump, Hawkeye conversion and Voltex aero Steve’s Subaru was easily one of the best-looking cars out there, but unfortunately gearbox trouble took the Impreza out at the very start of Saturday practice. A huge shame, but you can guarantee Team Japspeed will be back out and raring for the next round.

Onto the finals and 2010 introduced twin drifting to the Semi-Pro drivers, a brave move but all top 8 drivers stepped up to the plate and delivered some spectacular driving for non-Pro abilities! After a set of stunning runs the top spot went to Jordan Patton in his R32 Skyline while Matthew Peter-house’s awesome V8-powered RX7 took second closely followed by Mike Cooper in the SR20 Skyline.

Once again huge congratulations to all the Semi-Pro drivers over the weekend, it’s looking already like the 2010 season is going to be a close one.

Over at the Pro finals and Phil Morrison in the Driftworks S15 continued to dominate. Danny O’Brian pedaled his Competition Clutch-sponsored S14a put in a sterling performance after a dreadful problem-plagued qualifying, but unfortunately couldn’t match the speed and experience of Phil’s S15.

In the final Phil found himself against Simon Perry’s R33 GTS-T. Both drivers were on form all weekend, and after the first set of runs it was too close to call with a ‘One More Time’ being ordered. Phil absolutely nailed the next two runs, giving him the advantage and the top spot of the podium.

Fighting for 3rd and 4th were Japspeed team mates Danny Eyles and Paul Smith in their S15s. After the first run Paul took a 6-4 advantage over Danny, but a nasty gravel drop sent Paul into a spin giving Danny the win and final podium spot with a 10-0.

If the rest of the 2010 BDC season is anything like Silverstone we’re going to be in for an awesome championship. Round 2 for the Semi-Pro class is on May 1st over at Llandow while the Pro class takes over Silverstone yet again on the 23rd May this time the main circuit.

BDC Round 2 (Pro): Silverstone

A welcome return to the Brooklands/Luffield complex @ Silverstone sets the stage for Round 2 of the 2010 British Drift Championship.
Even though it’s officially summertime in Britain nothing could prepare you for the heatwave that was BDC Round 2. Drivers and machines were put to the absolute limit, and with the Japanese Tuning Show also taking place drift fans could get up close and personal with all the cars and drivers thanks to an open pit and driver signing – you don’t get that in any other motorsport!

Heat was without a doubt the key factor on the day. Temperatures soared to nearly 30 degrees and as expected took its toll on the competing cars, no more frustrating than Japspeed’s recently-repaired Impreza which retired with monumental oil and water temperatures. On the plus side, the awesome track temperature meant new levels of grip allowing drivers to push harder and faster.

Fast forward to qualifying and despite the obvious power disadvantage Declan Munnely’s Mk2 Escort put in one of the best qualifying runs all day. After his second run, Declan found himself second ahead of Danny Eyles, Greg Gush, Mark Luney and Steve Carter. Nothing beats the sight and sound of an old-school Escort revving its nuts off! But the man of the day was Driftworks’ Phil Morrison, who used all 666bhp (and god-like skill) to pull off a full backwards entry and hold it scoring two consecutive 98-point qualifiers. If you haven’t seen the video check out the Driftworks.co.uk homepage now!

After qualifying the drivers going through to the top 16 were:

1st Phil Morrison
2nd Declan Munnelly
3rd Christy Carpenter
4th Simon Perry
5th Matt Carter
6th Steve Evans
7th Steve Moore
8th Greg Gush
9th Mark Luney
10th Ashley Stevens
11th Wayne Keeber
12th Shane O’Sullivan
13th Shane Lynch
14th Ben Morley
15th Alan Green
16th Danny Eyles

Onto the top 16 and the first pairing was between Matt Carter in the Falken-sponsored S14 and Shane Lynch in the Japspeed/Stobart S15. This was only the second time Shane drove the newly V8 twin-turbo motor, and despite headgasket problems managed to put the pressure on where it really mattered. Unfortunately a spin during warm-up broke Matt Carter’s driveshaft, handing the victory instantly to Shane.

Next up was Alan Green in the other Falken S14 and Simon Perry in the Skyline Owners R33 GTS-T. Despite having never raced at Silverstone, Simon kept his cool and managed to keep with Alan giving a 5-5 first run. During the next run, an uncharacteristic spin from Alan gave the win 10-0 to Simon and a place in the top 8. The remaining drivers to make it through were:

Phil Morrison
Declan Munnely
Simon Perry
Steve Moore

Mark Luney
Wayne Keeber
Shane Lynch
Danny Eyles

A big shout out goes to the Team Morley cars of Steve Evand and Ben Morley – despite both qualifying (6th and 14th) mechanical problems with the two cars ended their day early. It’s safe to say the brown duo of Ben’s MkII Escort and Steve’s Starlet are definitely crowd favourites, and easily hold their own against the turbocharged metal out there.

Onto the top 8 and things were about to get smokey – Phil Morrison in the S15 vs Mark Luney in the T51-powered Supra. These two cars alone develop more than 1200bhp, and both drivers have plenty of experience @ Silverstone. After the first runs it was too close to call, so onto one more time! In the first Run Luney managed to stick with Phil giving another 5-5 run, but when Luney then lead Phil managed to pull some distance handing him the win by the smallest of margins.

After a poor qualifying, Danny Eyles was giving it 110 against Wayne Keeber in the Soarer. There was no stopping the S15 and Danny took the advantage on both runs. Speaking of aggressive driving, Declan Munnely in the MkII Escort managed to force Steve Moore’s S14 to make a mistake during his transition putting him through to the final 4 – not bad given the competition featured two turbocharged straight sixes and a twin turbo V8!

Drivers going through to the final 4 were:

Phil Morrison

Danny Eyles

Shane Lynch

Declan Munnely

First paring was Munnely vs Lynch. Shane’s monster power gave him the advantage in the first run, and eager to make up points Declan made a tiny mistake handing Shane the win and the first place to the finals.

Next up was Phil Morrison vs Danny Eyels, and without doubt the best run of the day. Both drove mega hard, sticking on one-another’s doors resulting in another one more time! Yet again both drivers refused to budge, but after Phil went offline by the smallest of margins the win was handed to Eyles resulting in a Japspeed final…

Now it’s probably worth mentioning the last time these two faced each other at Silverstone wasn’t exactly ideal. Both Skylines were written off, so a very nervous Japspeed owner Paul waited to see what happened with around 40 cans of Monster! There’s no team orders here, both were racing to win. Shane didn’t put a foot wrong, but Danny was absolutely on fire all day with entries that took aggression to a whole new level. After the two runs Danny went through with the win, and with both cars in one piece it was smiles all round at the Japspeed camp!

Unfortunately time restraints meant third place between Morrison and Munnely couldn’t run, but after a lengthy discussion between the two drivers it was agreed that both would take third place instead.

Round 3 will be taking over Lydden Hill in Kent on June 19th – this is one of the best circuits of the season and with the points table so close already it’s going to be a hard-fought round that’s for sure.
